Presidential Predictor: Golf

Since the 1980 presidential election, a curious trend has emerged: Jimmy Carter. Walter Mondale. Michael Dukakis. Bob Dole. Al Gore. John Kerry. John McCain. None of them played golf. All of them tasted bitter defeat. All of them lost to golfers.

That being said, Clinton often played to please her husband Bill Clinton, usually only playing a couple of times a year.

Southern Public Utilities Company Magazine

This publication is an important primary source for my thesis research.  Since the Duke Power archives are in a state of flux, I'm currently having to rely upon the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library to fulfill my research requirements.  However, I've discovered that their holdings have gaps.  So here's a listing of the available issues in the library:

Volume 1 - all 12 issues from February 1915 to January 1916

Volumes 2-4 - very spotty

• Volume 2 has issues 1 (February 1916), 2 (March 1916), 4 (May 1916), 6 (July 1916), 7 (August 1916), 9 (October 1916), 10 (November 1916), and 12 (January 1917)
• Volume 3 has issues 1 (February 1917) and 12 (January 1918)
• Volume 4 has issue 1 (February 1918)

Volumes 5-6 are missing.  How convenient considering Volume 5 would include information about the August 1919 streetcar strike in Charlotte...

Volumes 7-9 - only missing a few: March 1922, October 1922, February 1923, and January 1924

Volumes 10-11 - completely intact except for January 1926

Volumes 12-13 - only missing July 1927

Volumes 14-16 - missing September 1928, June 1929, and December 1929

Volumes 17-18 - missing January-March 1931 and January-February 1932

Volumes 19-20n8 - missing January-May 1933.  SPUC comes under the Duke Power Company name, and the publication becomes the Duke Power Magazine.

Been a while since I've posted, hasn't it?  Currently, we're shopping for a new house, and I'm about to start my second year of grad school. 

I'm very excited about my thesis topic!  I'm researching the history of public transportation in Charlotte from 1890 to 1960.  Within that focus, I will explore how the changes in technology--specifically the transition from streetcar to bus--altered how people experienced the urban environment.

This summer has been busy, though I had planned on it being a break from my crazy school schedule.  Mema had heart surgery, so I went home for a couple of weeks to help take care of Pa.  I'm still doing an internship with the Historic Landmarks Commission here in Charlotte.  My primary project is a survey and research report about a farmhouse that was once part of a dairy farm...  I should get back to writing this report, though.  Toodles!
